Leading Our Profession Into the Future

Hello fellow YPS Member!

My name is Maria Phillis and I am honored to serve as your Chair of the Young Physician Section of OSMA. I am a board certified obstetrician gynecologist and a maternal fetal medicine subspecialist physician in Cleveland, Ohio. I was born and raised in northeast Ohio, where I then attended Case Western Reserve for my undergraduate education. I am a second career physician, as I first went to law school at the University of Chicago and advocated as an assistant prosecuting attorney in the juvenile division of Lake County Ohio, handling child protection cases. After several years of practice I decided to pursue a career as a physician. I attended Johns Hopkins for medical school and came back home to Ohio for my residency in OBGYN at University Hospitals Cleveland and stayed for fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at MetroHealth/University Hospitals and stayed to practice at University Hospitals.

As a YPS section, we have represented you on multiple issues that pertain to protecting your ability to practice and protecting science and evidence-based medicine. At our recent Annual Meeting, we drafted and passed policy supporting physician-led health care teams, childhood vaccination, and gender-affirming care. We supported protections for free speech and protest by physicians and protections for IVF, as well as preserving our ability to robustly represent you at the HOD, among many other issues presented to our OSMA.

We are also pleased to offer you access to financial and career advice and services. We have an exciting new partnership with resolve, a contract review service to assist our members in receiving timely, affordable legal review of their employment offers and contracts at a 20% discount. Please reach out to Kyle Skinner at kskinner@osma.org for a discount code.

On May 22, we have a fabulous webinar with panacea Financial on Transitioning from Residency to Practice. You can register here: https://lp.panaceafinancial.com/transitioning-from-residency-to-practice-webinar.

As your Chair, I look forward to continuing our work to support you, our YPS section, the future of the OSMA. I hope to hear from you ways in which you would like OSMA to support you, your practice and your patients and look forward to humbly serving you for the remainder of my term.

Thank you for your OSMA Membership!
