Dearest MSS friends,

On behalf of your MSS Governing Council, I wanted to address concerns many of you have brought to our attention, especially as it pertains to OSMA PAC endorsements for this coming election cycle and a recent update from President Dr. Gary Katz.

The OSMA has been a voice for Ohio physicians for more than 150 years, and it will likely continue to play that role in the decades to come. As future leaders in the profession, we have the responsibility to continue to be engaged to help ensure the OSMA reflects the priorities you value. For many years, the MSS has proudly held the distinction of being the "conscience of the OSMA.” We stand firm in our desire to relentlessly advocate for ourselves, our profession, and our patients despite the political climate around us.

In recent years, the MSS has pushed the OSMA forward on pertinent issues including protecting patients from ICE enforcement, safeguarding physicians in conflict zones, limiting profiteering in healthcare, and protecting reproductive and gender affirming care. Outside of the policy cycle, we’ve come together to deliver testimony, mailed in letters, and engaged in local civics on topics like sexual education and local medical debt resolution. We’ve done so much and couldn’t do any of it without you!

We are committed to hearing and understanding your concerns, so please continue to reach out! We are honored to be in community with you, and hope you’ll join us in the struggle for a better Ohio.

In solidarity and with hope,

Saaleha Shamsi
OSMA-MSS Chair

Concerned About Student Loans?

A lot has changed with federal student loans in the past few months. The new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) launched, and GradPLUS eligibility changed. The Department of Education is offering a temporary 1% interest rate discount* for borrowers enrolled in autopay.

  • This applies to Direct Loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2012.
  • The reduced rate runs through June 30, 2028.
  • Borrowers must enroll in autopay by 11:59 p.m. ET on Sept. 30, 2026, to qualify.
  • If already enrolled in autopay, the additional rate discount will be automatically applied.
