Vaccine Mandate Support & PPE Recommendations for Healthcare Settings

The AMA has joined over fifty other organizations in a joint statement supporting mandatory COVID vaccinations for all healthcare workers.

Also, make sure you are up to date on current PPE guidance from the CDC and the state of Ohio.

Vaccine Mandates

On Monday, the AMA joined over fifty other organizations in a joint statement supporting mandatory COVID vaccination for all healthcare workers. With the Delta variant causing spikes in cases and hospitalizations, the organizations believe getting healthcare workers vaccinated is in the best interest of patients, workers and the public. Several large health systems across the country—including Trinity Health, who owns Mt. Carmel Health in Columbus, Ohio—have already notified employees they will mandate the COVID vaccine moving forward.

As OSMA reported in the spring and early summer, vaccine mandates were debated extensively in the Ohio legislature, and we anticipate the topic being on the legislative agenda when the House and Senate return to session in September. We will keep you updated as information is available!

PPE Recommendations

We continue to receive questions from some practices related to guidance or rules for PPE use—specifically masks for workers and patients in healthcare settings (regardless of vaccination status). Below is the most up-to-date guidance from the CDC and the state of Ohio.

From the CDC:

Healthcare Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations in Response to COVID-19 Vaccination

Guidance For Fully Vaccinated People

From State of Ohio:

As of June 30, the state of Ohio rescinded all its executive and public health orders.

OSMA also encourage members, as they are establishing protocols regarding PPE and infection control in their offices, to contact their malpractice carriers for risk management advice before implementing or changing policies.
