ReStart Ohio – Healthcare Updates

As decisions are being made on COVID-19 restarting and relief efforts, the OSMA continues to work with state and federal officials to advocate for you, our Ohio physicians.


Healthcare Order Related to Non-Essential Surgeries and Procedures Amended

On June 2, Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Director Amy Acton, M.D., amended her order related to non-essential surgeries and procedures. Specifically, the director stated “Medical providers, including dentists, in the State may resume all surgeries and procedures that were delayed by prior Director of Health orders.”

As you recall, prior to this week, elective procedures that required an overnight hospital stay and large amounts of PPE were prohibited. Now, all procedures can be done while meeting safety criteria, including:


ODH Provides Updated COVID-19 Testing Guidance

This week, ODH issued an update to its COVID-19 testing guidance. Five priority categories have been established and the new guidance states that as of June 2, testing should be made available to individuals described in Priorities 1, 2, 3, and 4. Priority 5 will be implemented at a later date, and further priorities might be added in the future.


Medicaid Clarifies Emergency Telehealth Coverage Rules Still in Place

Responding to an inquiry from the OSMA, staff from the Ohio Department of Medicaid clarified that the emergency rule related to expanded telehealth coverage is set to expire on 7/19/2020, and all the Medicaid managed care organizations (CareSource, UnitedHealthcare, Buckeye Community Healthplan, Molina and Paramount) should be using the same date. They should all be following the requirements listed in Appendix S – State of Emergency Requirements (scroll down to the last section).
