OSMA Supports Governor’s Announcement to Rescind Health Orders

Yesterday, Governor DeWine announced that all health orders (except those related to longterm care and assisted living facilities) will be rescinded on June 2.

The Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) supports this announcement about the upcoming revisions to the COVID-19 public health orders.

As we’ve learned more about the science of how this virus works and as more Ohioans have rolled up their sleeves to get vaccinated, we’ve made outstanding progress in bringing down the rate of new COVID-19 cases. That improvement in the rate of new cases has driven down rates of hospitalization and reduced the overall stress on our healthcare system in Ohio.

Vaccination has been a critical element in controlling this infection, and Ohio’s commitment to deliver this vaccine widely across the mass vaccination sites, hospitals, doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies and public health departments of our state has now borne fruit to allow these public health orders to be rescinded.

“The OSMA strongly urges all Ohioans who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to do so as soon as possible. While we have had a rapid rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine to over half of the adults in Ohio, we will be in an even better position as a state to avoid a resurgence of the virus with higher rates of vaccination.” said Lisa Egbert, MD, OSMA president.

While the risk of widespread infection in the overall population is now lower, if you are not vaccinated, you personally remain just as much at risk of severe disease, hospitalization or death as you did prior to this decrease in new cases. On behalf of the thousands of physicians, medical residents, and medical students we represent, OSMA encourages Ohioans to continue to do their part and to work together to promote the safety and well-being of our families, friends, neighbors, and others in our communities across the state.
