Congress Extends Medicare Telehealth Flexibilities

This week, Congress extended telehealth flexibilities under Medicare for another six months, until September 30, 2025.

This extension allows Medicare beneficiaries to continue receiving telehealth care from their homes, ensures expanded eligibility for healthcare providers offering these services, and maintains coverage for audio-only visits. Additionally, hospital-at-home programs remain operational, providing inpatient-level care at home for approved patients.

While this six-month reprieve is welcome, it underscores the need for long-term telehealth policies. The lack of permanency poses challenges for healthcare organizations, preventing stable investment in telehealth infrastructure and creating hurdles for providers balancing short-term policies with long-term planning.

OSMA will continue to monitor the federal actions around telehealth and advocate for consistent regulation and billing requirements.

Additionally, members continue to have questions about applicable telehealth billing codes and applicable services for Medicare recipients.
