February Advocacy Update

Hearings Held on HB 125

House Bill 125, a proposal that threatens to dilute the Save Our Sight fund, has had several hearings at the Ohio Statehouse this year. The Ohio Ophthalmological Society participated in an interested party meeting with HB 125 sponsor state Rep. Koehler. The bill is still in a House committee.

The OOS receives grant money from the Save Our Sight fund so that we can operate our Play Hard. Don’t Blink and SuperSpecs youth athletics and vocational eye safety programs. The fund is run by the Ohio Department of Health and is funded through an optional checkoff box at the time of vehicle registrations.

HB 125 would add organ donation organizations to the list of groups available for Save Our Sight funding and could potentially cut funding for eye safety and vision awareness programs run by the OOS and other organizations.

Ophthalmology Day at the Ohio Statehouse

The Ohio Ophthalmological Society’s 2020 Legislative Day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20 at 9 a.m. at the Ohio Statehouse.

This is your chance to ensure that state elected leaders and state agency officials hear directly from you on pending legislation and policy matters that directly impact ophthalmology and the practice of medicine.

A schedule of events for the OOS Legislative Day will be forthcoming but is likely to include a visit to either the Ohio House or Senate during an open session and one-on-one meetings with elected and appointed officials.

If you wish to attend the OOS Legislative Day at the Statehouse please contact OOS Director Reggie Fields today at RFields@ohioeye.org for more information and schedule of events.
