FACT: Very Few OPTOMETRISTS Perform Laser Surgeries
2023 Medicare Part B claims data makes it clear that just a small fraction of optometrists perform laser surgeries—including YAG laser capsulotomies (YAGs) and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasties (SLTs)—in states that have loosened the scope of practice to permit them to do so.

DATA: OSU Optometry Students are NOT Leaving Ohio to Perform Surgery
The overwhelming majority of the 640 optometrists who graduated between 2012 and 2021 are not performing laser surgery. (Note: for privacy reasons the Medicare Part B data only lists those performing >10 procedures.)

OOS Members Advocate Against Optometric Surgical Bill (SB 36)
The Ohio Optometric Association continues to push for changes in state law that would allow optometrists to perform a wide range of surgical procedures—including those involving lasers, scalpels, and injections. Senate Bill 36 would make Ohio one of the most expansive states in terms of optometric scope of practice.
