Investing in Ohio’s Physicians and Future Physicians

OSMA Foundation's Third Quarter 2026 Recap:

A medical student begins to see the physician they want to become. A practicing physician pursues health law training. A colleague who is struggling finds a safe place to turn.

Your support helps make each of these possible. This quarter, we’re sharing their experiences, reflecting on five years of Summer Scholars and Well-Being CARE, and looking ahead to how you can get involved.

Summer Scholars:

A summer of learning, discovery and mentorship, this program continues to support medical students' summer experiences in research, community health, advocacy, and medical education.

Well-Being CARE Service:

As a safe place to turn, OSMA's Well-Being CARE Service offers a check in on your mental health—whether you’re taking stock of how you’re doing, or you're struggling and unsure how to ask for help.

Since 2021, CARE has offered Ohio healthcare professionals a free, anonymous mental and emotional health checkup, with options for follow-up support and referrals.

Kumar Fund is Helping Physicians Lead

Physicians know how policy decisions affect their patients and their practice. The Kumar Emerging Physician Leaders & Advocates Fund helps them build the skills to advocate for both.

Dr. Engy Habashy received an award to support training in health law. She shared what the fund has meant to her:

“The Kumar Emerging Physician Leaders Fund has been an invaluable opportunity, allowing me to explore my passion for patient and physician advocacy. It has empowered me to dedicate my time to advancing our profession by remaining informed on policy, communicating effectively with lawmakers, and educating them on the issues that matter most to Ohio’s patients.”

Athens County Medical Society’s support continues

Thank you to the Athens County Medical Society (ACMS), as it has contributed nearly $10,000 to the OSMA Foundation to continue supporting physicians and medical students.

The gift includes $5,000 for two Summer Scholars stipends, one in 2027 and one in 2028, with priority given to students from Athens County or attending Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. The remaining support will help fund physician advocacy through the Kumar Fund, physician well-being, and other Foundation needs.

We greatly appreciate ACMS for carrying forward its commitment to local medicine!

Interested in supporting students from your community or alma mater? We’d welcome a conversation about how a gift from you, your medical society, or your alumni group could support Summer Scholars from a particular county, region, or medical school.

Be part of what comes next

Summer Scholars and Kumar Fund applications open in December. If you know a medical student or young physician who could benefit, help us spread the word.

You can also share CARE with colleagues or connect us with an organization interested in supporting physician education, advocacy, or well-being.

Whether you’ve given, shared a resource, or encouraged someone to participate, thank you for helping this work reach the people who need it.
