OSMA CEO Discusses AI and Health Insurance Practices on WOSU Radio
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) is helping physicians in certain aspects of clinical care, but it is also creating new challenges in delivering care and receiving payment for services. Health insurance companies are increasingly using AI across many aspects of their operations, raising concerns about how the technology may affect patient access to care and physician decision-making.
OSMA is advocating for member physicians and practices to ensure policymakers and patients understand how insurers are using AI and the potential impact on medical care. We are also working to promote appropriate regulatory oversight of these practices.
This week, OSMA CEO, Todd Baker, joined All Sides with Amy Juravich on WOSU Public Media to provide the physician perspective on the growing role of AI in healthcare. During the interview, Baker discussed how insurers are using AI-driven tools in processes such as prior authorization and claims review, and how these practices can create additional barriers that delay or complicate patients’ ability to receive efficient and effective care.
Baker emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and appropriate oversight to ensure that AI technologies are used in ways that support patient care rather than create unnecessary obstacles for physicians and their patients.
