Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine
The OHSAA’s sports medicine committee, named the Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine (JACSM), was established in 1958 by the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) to assist the member schools of the OHSAA to protect the health and safety of student athletes in the interscholastic athletics programs in Ohio’s secondary schools. The JACSM is the longest serving sports medicine committee that works with state athletic associations in the United States.
Original membership consisted exclusively of physicians who were members of the OSMA. Members from the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association were added in the 1980’s.
The stated mission of the JACSM is to serve in an advisory capacity to the OHSAA Board of Directors. The committee serves to promote the health and safety of Ohio’s interscholastic athletes through close cooperation with the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Ohio Athletic Trainers Association and other sports medicine organizations. The primary focus is to address policy issues in sports medicine and to provide physician coverage of OHSAA's state tournaments and playoffs. Additionally, the Committee brings special recognition to volunteer physicians for long and dedicated service to interscholastic athletes.
The current committee makeup includes physicians, M.D.’s and D.O.s, athletic trainers, a researcher who is also a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, a staff liaison to the OSMA and the sports medicine liaison on staff at the OHSAA.
The committee meets periodically to address items of business as coordinated through the Committee Chair and the OHSAA sports medicine staff liaison.
