Learning Where Cardiac Research Meets Patient Care
Summer Scholar Hyun Su Kim explored atrial fibrillation research, cardiac electrophysiology and cardiothoracic surgery at Cleveland Clinic.
This summer, OSMA Foundation Summer Scholar, Hyun Su Kim, spent several weeks at Cleveland Clinic contributing to clinical research on atrial fibrillation while observing cardiothoracic surgery and cardiac electrophysiology.
The experience allowed him to learn in several different settings, from conversations about complex treatment decisions in the clinic to observing the skill and teamwork required in the operating room.
“Each day at Cleveland Clinic offered something new to learn,” Hyun Su said. “Seeing physicians work together to care for patients with complex heart conditions made me even more interested in this field.” |
Studying Atrial Fibrillation
Hyun Su’s research involved a substudy of the Targeting Risk Interventions and Metformin for Atrial Fibrillation Trial, or TRIM-AF Trial.
The trial investigates the role of metformin and lifestyle and risk factor modification in preventing the progression of atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AF.
As part of the substudy, Hyun Su contributed to research examining physical activity and AF burden. The team plans to continue investigating whether physical activity can help predict AF burden, as well as the role seasonal variation may play in AF.
His time at Cleveland Clinic also allowed him to observe how physicians approach patient care across cardiac specialties.
“From discussing complex treatment decisions in the clinic to watching the skill and teamwork in the operating room, each day offered something new to learn,” he said. |
The Impact of Mentorship
Learning from Dr. Eric Roselli and Dr. Mina Chung was a highlight of Hyun Su’s summer. Their guidance gave Hyun Su insight into the clinical decision-making and collaboration involved in caring for patients with complex heart conditions

“They are not only exceptional physicians but also supportive mentors,” he said. “They answered my questions, explained how they make decisions and encouraged me to think carefully about patient care.” |
